Context

At the beginning of 2022, after a long and respectful restoration process, the former 16th-century civil manor house—located near the Torreón and the walls of Las Cuarenta in the medieval village of Briones (La Rioja)—will open its doors as the new Santa María Briones hotel.

The tower-palace, believed to stand on what was once an 11th-century dwelling, rises as a lookout next to the medieval wall in a strategic spot, with enviable views of the Ebro’s meander and the vineyards of the Rioja Alta.

Santa María Briones is a long-cherished project of the promoting family—a product of a love story between a Riojan and a Puerto Rican who, after traversing La Rioja in search of the perfect place to establish a small hotel to be passed on to their heirs, discovered Briones, its cobblestone streets rich in life and history, and their love of a tradition deeply rooted in wine culture.

Thus, they have created a family and entrepreneurial project centred on this new high-end, adult-only independent hotel that encapsulates its soul and essence.

But above all, Santa María Briones is the story of a rediscovery, of a return, of going back. It is the story of a Riojan who has lived in the United States for many years and returns to his homeland to recover for himself and his descendants those forgotten roots, to reconnect with the essence of a culture they were immersed in from birth. And it is also the story of a perceptive, cultured and intelligent Puerto Rican who appreciated everything this village and land had to offer, valued it, and made it her new home.

The new Santa María Briones hotel is the place to discover and enjoy La Rioja, the region of Briones, and its defining feature: wine culture, from a respect for tradition and a curiosity for the future of this innovative winemaking sector. It is also where one can fall in love with its people, their devotion to a way of life based on the joy of simple things, good food, honesty and the authentic character of the Riojan spirit. A vital legacy, a sensory experience that returns us to the most basic and simple things, those we sometimes forget. A starting point, a space for reconnection that challenges the hectic lifestyle of the big city, offering safety, privacy, tranquillity, protection and wellbeing.
